Foreign Currents, American Synthesis

American comics have a home address. They have never had sealed windows.

Keep the spine clear

This archive is about an American art form: its newspaper infrastructure, comic-book publishers, shops, artists and readers. Influence does not weaken that identity. It explains how living forms grow.

The useful question is not who “won” an influence argument. It is what an American creator saw elsewhere that solved a problem on the page.

Miller looks east and across the Atlantic

Frank Miller has described encountering Goseki Kojima's work on Lone Wolf and Cub and the work of Moebius. In Ronin, those encounters joined his American crime and superhero foundation. The result is not a Japanese or French comic wearing American clothes. It is an American artist changing his timing, space and design after discovering different possibilities.

Manga could make decompressed action and silent movement feel natural. European album traditions offered different approaches to environment and finish. Miller's synthesis helped make those currents visible to a much larger American readership.

The British crossing

2000 AD became a proving ground for British writers and artists working in compressed weekly installments. In the 1980s, creators including Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, Brian Bolland and others entered American publishing. Their arrival is often called the British Invasion.

Again, the mechanism matters. They brought experience with ruthless short-form hooks, satire, science fiction and a different relationship to genre. American publishers and editors gave that experience a new market. The work that followed belongs to both a crossing and a destination.

What to look for

  • Changes in pacing: how many moments does an action receive?
  • Changes in environment: is the world a backdrop or a system?
  • Changes in genre tone: reverence, satire or disassembly.
  • The editor and publisher who made the crossing possible.
